Description
The Moss campion (Silene acaulis) is common all over the high arctic and tundra in the higher mountains of Eurasia and North America. It grows on alpine fellfields, on windswept rocky ridges and summits above treeline. The dense cushions are creating their own microclimate allowing this plant to survive the harsh conditions. Additionally those rock dweller produces their own humus out of dead leaves and accumulated wind-blown sediments. In spring the bloom covers the cushions in a beautiful pink. The flowers are also short stemmed to resist the wind in the habitat.
